Ceide Fields is located 8 km west of Ballycastle in County Mayo on R314.  This educational center allows visitors to view an excavation site of Stone Age farmland.  A peat-preserved 5000 year-old- pine tree dominates the center of the building.  There are informative exhibits, a boardwalk, an audio-visual presentation, guided tours, an observation deck, and a tearoom

offering homemade refreshments.  There are stunning views of Slieve League and Downpatrick Head.

The Ceide Fields are the oldest-known field systems in the world,

over five and a half millenia old.  The remains of stone field walls,

houses, and megalithic tombs are

preserved under a blanket of peat

for several square miles.
