Jerpoint Abbey is located in County Kilkenny on Highway N9. It is 20 km south of Kilkenny city and 2.5 km southwest of Thomaston. It is one of the finest of Ireland’s medieval ecclesiastical ruins. It is believed to have started as a Benedictine house but it later was the
home of Cistercians around 1180. Among the ruins was a Church, Chapter House, refectory/kitchen and store-room/dormitory arranged around a square cloister garth. The cloister is decorated with interesting carvings and there are several beautiful tombstones in the Church.
